Cambodia : Tapho, a college for 450 students, 35,000 euros
Initial situation : college students share their classrooms with pupils in primary school
In North-West Cambodia , schools often do not have sufficient classrooms for all pupils. Proportionnally, there are too many pupils per classroom, so secondary pupils go to school for only half a day. The academic level is very poor, through lack of teachers and books, but also due to a lack in buildings.
In spring 2004, the local authorities signed the project request. Enfants du Mékong led two actions concurrently : in France , the search for funding quickly succeeded thanks to a delegation of Enfants du Mékong in Singapore. In Cambodia , the construction of a 6 classroom building, by a Khmer contractor was achieved with the help of the local population in Tapho.
In Tapho, college students studied in a primary school and in the Buddhist pagoda in the village. The Enfants du Mékong volunteer in charge of project coordination in this area accepted the local request : study conditions were terrible but the motivation of parents ready to work for the reconstruction of their village was a guarantee of success.
regularly receives requests of this type from school directors in primary or in secondary schools, asking for buildings. Before contacting our association, they systematically ask the local authorities or the Provincial Education Department, without success. In fact, the corruption of governmental structures does not help the development in provinces too far away from Phnom Penh . The project request is supported by teachers, pupils and parents : they are all concerned by the problem of schooling. Real and serious studies represent the future of these children.

Fund raising and building construction are monitored by the volunteer. October 2004 : one month after the start of the school year, 450 students from the college study in new and comfortable classrooms. A final financial report withpictures of the inauguration was sent to the private donators who financed the project in an effort to thank them for their support.
