Who we are
Enfants du Mékong UK was started by Priscille Evain and Anne-Laure Le Saux, both veterans of Enfants du Mékong in Asia (Anne-Laure started EdM Singapour in 1999, and in Hong Kong in 2001, to be replaced by Priscille in 2003).
In 2005, Enfants du Mekong registered as a Charity .(n°1111296). It is therefore a recipient of Gift Aid and can reclaim 28% tax on any donations made by individuals, whether large or small, regular or one-off.
EDM UK is managed by a volunteer Executive Board :
President : Priscille Evain
Vice President : Guylaine Amyot
Secretary : Anne-Laure Le Saux
Treasurer : Celia Savigny
Sponsorships : Anne Deneuville
Marketing/Communication : Marie-Anne Duncan
Enfants du Mékong UK has chosen to focus its help on a remote area of Northern Cambodia, Preah Vihear, which has not drawn the interest of other organizations. See the whole description of our "Objective for 2008".
We work closely within the French community in London, with whom we have strong ties. We raise funds through 4 main channels :
- On a Sunday of mid-October, our now famous " rallye pédestre ”, a treasure hunt on foot organized in a different area of London each year.
- Lunch parties gathering all the members, sponsors or people close to EdM UK.
- Sales of silk scarves made in Cambodia (through an EDM-lead project) and various other items during the French Lycée Christmas Fair and in private sales.
- With the French women’s association Londres Accueil , classes of Asian cooking, country walks, etc...
- Sponsorship of 50 children based in the remote Preah Vihear region in Northern Cambodia.
Sponsorship is a simple and effective way that allows each individual sponsor to make a personal contribution towards redistributing wealth between rich and poor countries.
£21 per month will feed, clothe, care, treat and educate the child throughout his childhood. Moreover, it will benefit his whole family, in particular his siblings. A letter is sent each term, detailing the progress made by the sponsored child at school.
-
Building two additional classrooms in Svay Damnak, Cambodia: £3,200 (2007).
-
Building 5 wells in Svay Damnak: £3700 (2007)
-
Building a second school in Sisophon, Cambodia, thanks to a special corporate gift of £40,000 (dec 2007/2008)
-
As mothers of privileged children for whom no expense is spared on education, we want to give back as much as we can to the education and welfare of poor children in Cambodia, a country destroyed by more than 30 years of civil war.
-
We are very closely and personally involved in each project, while relying on the staff and organization of EDM in Cambodia to help us carry out their realization.
-
In early 2007, we travelled to Cambodia to visit the EDM Cambodia Headquarter in Sisophon and to meet our sponsored children in the Preah Vihear region. This trip, self financed, allowed us to meet with local project leaders and discuss our next project.
